Blender 2.92 Released
On February 25, 2021, the Blender Foundation released a new update, Blender 2.92.
Blender is a free open source 3d creation software. It is used in animated films, 3d modeling, motion graphic, games, virtual reality and virtually all areas where other paid 3d software packages are used.
At the beginning of its history, Blender was treated rather as a curiosity and a simple free tool. However, today it has become one of the most powerful 3D graphics packages, which can easily compete with applications such as 3ds max, Maya or Cinema 4D.
In the last version of Blender 2.92 a number of new features and improvements were introduced: new workflow for editing meshes, new ways to simulate physics, improved rendering with Cycles and composing with Evee, and much more.
Below I will present the most important of them.
Introduced new Geometry Nodes for creating and editing meshes with nodes.
Thanks to this, you will be able to create your own custom modiefier using a simple interface.
Sculpting tools have been improved.
Now you can smear and pinch the surfaces of the model you are working on. Improved topology while sculpting so now the mesh will look nice even when you use the tools above.
With a new option in Grab Tool, you can shape the silhouette of an object in a more natural way without worrying about accidentally changing something where you didn’t intend to.
Flexible deformation has been added to Snake Hook, which is perfect for stylized shapes sketching. The Mesh Fairing option has also been added, which allows you to smooth the remaining hole after – along with creating a clean topology, after removing part of it.
In 2D animation, it is now possible to edit Pencil Strokes with Bezier Curver.
The interpolation of Grease Pencil has also been improved, so your lines can be much smoother. Trace Image now has Image Sequences support, making it easier to bring your storyboards to 3D.
Creating basic 3D shapes in Blender 2.92 is now much easier.
It only takes two clicks to create a cylinder or box. This is now similar to creating primitives just like you do in other 3d apps.
The Cryptomatte capability has now been added to the Cycles and Eevee render engines, so the mattes settings for composing will now be shared between Eevee and Cycles.
Arbitary Output Variables will now also be available for the Eevee engine. Volume rendering will now use memory more efficiently using the NanoVDB grid. OptiX has the option of hybrid rendering, so you will be able to take full advantage of your hardware – it will use both the CPU and GPU. Ambient Occlussion and Bevel shaders have OptiX support in this version.
Blender 2.92 also introduces a new simulation method called APIC.
Thanks to it, fluid simulations can now be much more energetic, but also much more stable than in the earlier FLIP method. In the field of simulation, also added: new Viscosity, faster playback for smaller chache sizes, cloth with excluding from object collision using vertex group, improved particle sampling and disable collider without removing the modifier.
In Compositor added Exposure Node, New Save as Render in File Output Node and better premultiplication in Keying Node.
These are not the only new features in Blender 2.92. You can see the full list with examples on the official website of the Blender Foundation: https://www.blender.org/download/releases/2-92/
