Top Free Textures Sites

In the work of every 3d artist comes a moment when you need to finally find a texture for the prepared object.

It does not matter whether you will texture the object in the standard way, or you will only using the fragments to use them as, for example, a stencil in the Mudbox or Z-Brush. It is always important to have the source texture in the best possible quality and the highest resolution possible.

You can of course ask yourself a question: why do not I just go on google and look for the picture I need? Of course, you can do it, but then you have to count on the fact that the license of the picture you find may not allow you to use it in your work. You can of course check it at the source, i.e. on the page that posted it.

But sometimes it is very difficult to find and very time-consuming. If, however, you decide to simply use Google photos, you must be aware that if you use an unauthorized texture, someone could take a legal action on you. It’s best if the pictures are under a CC0 license, that is, one that allows you to use in any way – commercial or private. That’s why it’s worth having a few proven sites where you can find free textures and which have clear rules for re-use.

Textures.com

Formerly known cgtextures.com. This is probably the largest textures database on the internet. There are images available from practically any field. There are over 124k different textures, from which in one day you can download 15 images. Some of them are also available in the tileable version. In addition to this, there are PBR materials, 3d scanned surfaces and 3d scanned objects. The resolution of free versions may not impress, but for most of the projects it is sufficient. This are mostly images in the range of 1200 to 1600 px resolution. You can also always opt for the purchase of credits, which you can exchange for textures at a higher resolution. A large version of an image usually costs 4-8 credits. The image license from textures.com allows you to use them even when selling 3D models. All you have to do is provide information that textures come from textures.com.

Freestocktextures.com

All images on this page are available in full resolution. There are over 1000 textures and all of them under the CC0 license. It is not necessary to provide the source of the images in your work, but it would be nice if you gave the information in your work that textures came from freestocktextures. The daily download limit for a non-registered user is 5, and for a registered one 50. There are many interesting textures from the many useful categories. Although the database is not very large, it is worth to go here, especially when you need a high resolution image.

Among the categories you will find many of the most popular items such as, bricks, grass, ground, wood, metal and many more. You can use the textures from this page in both private and commercial projects, with almost no restrictions. It is only forbidden only to spread and sell them in a modified or unmodified form.

In addition, you’ll also find also sky backgrounds and environment panoramas. Images from this site can be used in commercial works. Texturify does not have a downloads counter, so you can download as much texture as you currently need. Authors ask only to credit them in some way.

Free Photo Stocks Sites

You can also find a lot of interesting free textures on photo stocks. It’s a bit harder to find them because of the large number of regular photos. But when you look well you will find the ones that are useful. The most popular free photos are: pexels.com, pixabay.com, unsplash.com.

Other smaller textures sites

There are many other websites on which you can find valuable free textures. These include, among others: textureking.com, wildtextures.com, cgbookcase.com, 3dtextures.me, 3dxo.com and texture.ninja

Your own textures database

This is actually the best source you can imagine. It is worth to build your own texture collection, in which you know what is where and which you have available at hand.

Personally, this is the first place I use when texturing models. I encourage each of you start collecting this kind of pictures. Do them everywhere and everything that you think you might need. Even one photo taken with a smartphone can be gold and help you maintain the deadline.
